Review: The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters

The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters (Miss Temple, Doctor Svenson, and Cardinal Chang, #1)The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters by Gordon Dahlquist
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

An inventive steampunk adventure in a beautifully detailed world, this book has a lot going for it. The characters and dialogue are engaging, thought you might want to smack Miss Temple upside the head a time or two. Dahlquist has a wonderful imagination, and he’s brought his story to the page with a good deal of skill.
The plot is convoluted, and along with the cast of secondary characters and location descriptions, can bog the book down a bit. While I’m all for a detailed story, there is a point at which my eyes glaze over and I suddenly realize I have no idea what was written on the last page I read. This is the type of book I’d recommend reading when you have the energy to fully engage with it, not when you want to unwind before bed.
