My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I got this sampler from the author after attending a panel on short stories, and it’s proved to be a wonderful collection. I usually read full-length novels, but more and more lately I haven’t had the time to invest in really lengthy stories. (That or my attention span is getting shorter.) These tales were a perfect length to pick up and read on a lunch break, or when I had half an hour to kill before picking my daughter up from school.
I’ve read several other collections and anthologies of short stories, and usually there are only a handful I really connect with, but I liked all of the stories in this book. They range in genre from fantasy and fairy tale to science fiction. One, “Like Diamond Tears from Emerald Eyes,” reads like the plot of a table top gaming session, and “They Do It with Robots” was barely three pages long, but no matter the length or subject matter, Stone showed his talent as a writer with compelling characters, rich descriptions, and engaging plots.
